THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN AN ARCHITECT AND ARCHITECTURAL TECHNOLOGIST

At SJR Architecture we often get asked what the difference between an Architect and an Architectural Design and Technologist. Both Architects and Technologists are required to hold professional indemnity insurance and follow a code of conduct. Usually, Architects are more design led where as Technologists focus on the construction, technology, materials and the science behind the build, as well of course as the design.

Architectural Technologists can offer a substantial amount to your build project. A list below are a few examples:
  • listen and understand the clients brief
  • design & concept stage
  • handle and submit the planning application to the local council
  • work along side other professionals in the industry who are needed to help with your build for example, structural engineers, planning consultants, ecologists and builders
  • can project manage the build from start to finish
  • handle any issues which may arise during construction
Either way both Architects and Architectural Technologists should always keep the end user in mind and remember they are both capable of handling your project; its all depends on who you have that connection with and who you feel understand you more.
